Buttercream recipe

Buttercream recipe for a single layer on a 30cm cake.

100g unsalted butter, softened

Put the butter and icing sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat until the volume increases and the mixture is paler in colour.

Add the egg yolk and beat for a further two minutes for a lighter, airier butter cream. Spread on to the cake with a palette knife.

Added flavourings

Vanilla add 1 tsp of vanilla extract

Chocolate add 30g cocoa powder

Orange add the zest of 1 orange

Coffee combine 1 tsp instant coffee with 1 tsp boiling hot water

Rose add 1 tsp natural rose flavouring

Praline add 50g finely ground toasted hazelnuts, or hazelnut paste

Pistachio add 50g finely ground unsalted pistachio nuts
