Feast unveils Australia's finest foods

The country’s best pizza is in Melbourne, Sydney is top for tacos, falafel is at its best in Perth and if you want salt and pepper squid you should head to the Top End, according to this year’s Feast food awards.

The list of Australia’s best eateries, announced on Monday, was whittled down from an SBS Feast magazine reader-nominated shortlist, and then crowned by local magazine contributors who have what is possibly the best job in the world.

“We have contributors in each capital city who put on their best ‘eating pants’ and go out and taste up to around four or five establishments in each of the 10 categories,” Feast editor Alix Clark told Guardian Australia.

“There’s a lot of eating involved,” she said.

Surely a contentious subject, the best pies to be had in the whole of Australia can apparently be found at Red Door bakeries in Adelaide.

Head north a few thousand kilometres and you will find Hingston Chinese in Darwin, home to award-winning salt and pepper squid.

For a good Portugese tart, Sweet Belem in Sydney’s inner-west suburb of Petersham is the place to go. Also in Sydney, El Loco won for their tacos and Spice I Am took the prize for green curry. Melbourne also won two awards – The French Quarter Patisserie (croissants) and DOC Gastronomia (pizza). Taro’s in Brisbane is said to have the best ramen.

Perth’s The Prophet is the source of officially the nation’s best falafel. Jihad Moussallem, who runs the restaurant with his son Christian, is behind the recipe.

Moussallem told Guardian Australia The Prophet was a small restaurant that seated about 50 people, and was often fully booked.

“I run the shop the old-fashioned way, we never advertise,” said Moussallem, who has been making falafel for 15 years.

“The ingredients are all the same but you have to fiddle with it. I have lots of experience in this field. Everywhere in the world you eat falafel it’s different, but I really worked hard to perfect the falafel.

“We cook everything fresh every day and look after people. We’re a happy little restaurant.”

Clark said: “That’s the type of thing we love at Feast.

“All of these places are quite often fabulous, family-run businesses with closely guarded family recipes.”

The SBS Feast food awards’ shortlist of about 200 restaurants is also available as a free app.
